Reaching students is easy when the subject matter is something that interests them. This is not the case with students only taking the course to fulfill a requirement.

Teachers need to be innovative if they hope to keep the attention of their captive audience. Many students will be resistant to the subject matter if it doesn't interest them. The key to any successful lecture is to make the material interesting to everyone. This can be done with a variety of tools and techniques.

Putting a New Spin on Old Material

Note taking, reading and worksheets are a standard in the world of education, but they aren't always sufficient teaching tools. To engage a mixed audience, it is best to look at the subject matter in a new light. Changing the perspective of a course will heighten the experience for students and introduce them to something fresh and new.

A course on ancient literature may bore many students, but if the course material is looked at in a new light, perhaps with a fresh modern perspective that ties it to relevant topics of today, students may decide to pay attention. The classics will always be classic, but there is no harm in shedding some new light on an old standard.

The Attitude of the Instructor Affects the Class

An instructor with genuine interest in the subject matter being taught is ideal. An instructor with both interest and enthusiasm is preferred. Often, instructors fall into a rut where the same old information no longer holds the same inspiration. This is a problem, students will notice if the teacher is disinterested or unhappy teaching and they will follow accordingly.

An instructor with passion for the material will inspire students. Students will recognize this attitude in their teachers and they will respect it. Even if the students do not share the same enthusiasm, they will respect their teachers for showing a genuine interest in both teaching and the subject at hand. This will, in turn, inspire the students to pay attention and succeed in class.

Tools and Technology for Classroom Use

In an age where technology is becoming more and more popular, it would seem a shame to ignore the possibilities. Technology has many things to offer the world of education. Textbooks and note taking are important, but instead of reading facts from a musty old text, use technology to spice things up.

Power point presentations are fairly easy to create and they offer a visual representation of the information being presented. Students that are visual learners will benefit from having a power point presentation. Power points are also ideal for note taking purposes. If the instructor is feeling generous, they could arrange the important information and include it in the presentation.

There are many readily available options for instructors. Some schools are even turning to web-based technology, which offers many tools for learning including: discussion forums, chat rooms and assignment submission.

Teaching should not abandon all tried and true practices, but students want to be challenged and entertained. These tips should help any instructor who is struggling to connect with their students and they may help pave the way for teachers of the future.
